10 Hybrid Superyachts for Earth Day

While traversing the sea in a superyacht is a singular experience, the excessive amount of fuel consumed by these thirsty vessels can put a damper on the festivities—and the environment.
But the recent explosion in hybrid yachts, which employ both electric motors and traditional diesel engines for propulsion, is helping to reduce harmful carbon emissions—and ease the pinch at the pump. The following are 10 of Passion4Luxury’s favorite hybrid superyachts.

COLUMBUS 40S SPORT HYBIRD
Launched in 2013 by Italy’s Columbus Yachts, the eco-friendly Columbus 40S Sport Hybrid features a hybrid propulsion system equipped with two diesel engines and two electric motors. When underway using only the electric motors, the aluminum-hulled yacht can glide across the waters with vastly reduced noise and vibrations. Accommodating up to 10 guests in five spacious suites, the yacht is currently for sale with an asking price of around $16 million. (columbusyachts.it)

FEADSHIP SAVANNAH
Built by the Netherlands–based Feadship Yachts and launched in spring 2015, the 273-foot Feadship Savannah features a single diesel engine (compared to the two found on traditional yachts) paired with three electric generators and high-power, lithium-ion batteries. An azimuth thruster at the bow grants the ship extra maneuverability in port. One of the ship’s standout features is an underwater lounge inside the hull, which features a thick glass wall that allows guests to gaze into the ocean. Savannah will be available for charter this season, with locations available upon request. (feadship.nl)

WIDER 150
Wider Yachts’ first hybrid superyacht, the Wider 150, launched from the Italian shipyard in October 2015. The aluminum ship features a diesel-battery hybrid system that runs on either lithium polymer batteries paired with a power management system (specifically designed by Wider) or with four inline, variable-speed diesel generators. Outside, wing-like structures unfold from the boat’s hull to function as decks, swimming platforms, and lounging stations. With a helipad, a hidden one-car garage, and a saltwater swimming pool that converts into a tender garage, the yacht delivers plenty of space to stow all sorts of Bond-worthy getaway vehicles. The Wider 150 is available for around $29 million. (wider-yachts.com)

ADMIRAL E MOTION 55 QUINTA ESSENTIA
Envisioning a cutting-edge yacht with superior hybrid capabilities and a clean, modern exterior, Sergei Dobroserdov of Monaco’s Dobroserdov Design conceived the 180-foot Admiral E Motion 55 in 2013. Built by Admiral Yachts and launched in May 2016 as Quinta Essentia, the full displacement yacht can reach a top speed of 17 knots when using both diesel and electric power and 9 knots when running on electric alone. The sleek maroon-and-silver yacht features two master cabins, four guest cabins, and a full-beam spa area complete with a sauna, a hammam, and a massage room. Quinta Essentia is available for charter. (admiralyachts.it)

ADMIRAL E MOTION 52
Like its sister ship, the Admiral E Motion 52 was designed by Monaco-based Dobroserdov Design. The 170-foot megayacht features a light-aluminum hull and a hybrid system with four diesel engines and two electric motors. The yacht can cruise at speeds of up to 25 knots, an impressive feat for a boat of its size. The Admiral E Motion 52 will don a full-beam spa area with a sauna, hammam, massage room, and a deck-style platform for outdoor activities. This hybrid superyacht can be had for $26.6 million. HEESEN HOME
Recently christened Home, the 163-foot Project Nova-Hybrid proves that silence really is golden. Built by Heesen Yachts, the fast displacement ship emits just 46 decibels while cruising—enhancing the peaceful onboard environment. At its 12-knot cruising speed, Home consumes around 26 gallons of fuel per hour, making it the most fuel-efficient vessel in its class. At 9 knots, the yacht can cruise on just the generators. Heesen launched Home on April 14, 2017, and the yacht will be delivered to its owners in June. (heesenyachts.com)

VICA
Respected Italian shipyard Benetti dove into the world of hybrid yachts with Benetti Vica, a 164-foot superyacht with a fiberglass hull and a superstructure built from aluminum, resulting in a lighter, more fuel-efficient ship. Onboard amenities include three outdoor balconies, a wrought-iron staircase that links four of the decks, and a large living space with a bar, grand piano, and a karaoke station. Launched in 2014, Vica has a range of 4,000 nautical miles when traveling at its cruising speed of 12 knots. (benettiyachts.it)

AMELS 188
Amels, a nearly century-old Dutch shipyard, is charting new territory with the Amels 188, its first hybrid offering. Designed to reduce operational costs and environmental harm, the yacht’s hybrid propulsion works in tandem with a heat-recovery system to reuse energy onboard. Designed by Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, the interiors are distinguished by a spacious beach club, a full-beam owner’s suite, and a wellness center with a gym, a sauna, and a Turkish steam shower. Amels 188 is currently scheduled to be delivered in early 2018. (amels-holland.com)

OCEANIC 140 DiELec
Built by Oceanic Yachts, the Oceanic 140 DiElec features a diesel-electric engine with a displaning twin-stepped hull that reduces friction and increases performance and stability. In addition to reduced fuel consumption, the yacht’s design also provides reduced operational costs. The 140-foot yacht can cruise up to 5,400 nautical miles at 8.5 knots, with a top speed of nearly 27 knots. Award-winning designer Michela Reverberi designed the interiors, which include a huge owner’s suite with a steam bath, a terrace, a hot tub, and an outdoor aft bridge with private dining areas. The Oceanic 140 DiElec is currently under construction. (oceanicyachts-shipyard.com)

SILVER WIND
The ISA Yachts Silver Wind 141-foot cruiser is the world’s first yacht to use water-jet propulsion coupled with a hybrid diesel-electric system. The yacht can reach a top speed of 32 knots when powered by its two diesel engines, or 8 knots when powered by only its water jets. Inside, the main saloon is decked out in onyx, marble, and Armani Casa and Hermès upholstery, while a custom-made circular dining table provides plenty of space for guests. Accommodating up to 10 guests, the yacht’s interior design is as bold and striking as its hybrid abilities. (isayachts.com)
